A lockout at two in the morning feels like a crisis, but a few calm decisions keep the situation safe and the final bill reasonable.
- Check every entrance firstA back door, garage keypad or hidden spare key can save you the whole cost of a service call.
- Heat changes the orderA child or pet locked in a car means you call 911 first and a locksmith second.
- Ask four questionsGet the business name, street address, license number and full price before you agree to anything.
- Know the going rateA Las Vegas house lockout usually runs $85 to $195 before any overnight fee is added.
- Refuse a price switchIf the price at the door is higher than the phone quote, you can say no.
- Have identification readyA real locksmith will ask you to prove that you live there or own the car.
What Counts as a Locksmith Emergency
An emergency is any lock problem that puts a person, an animal, a vehicle or a property at risk if it waits until morning. Being locked out of your house late at night qualifies. So does a door that will not lock after someone kicked it in, a key broken off in the ignition along the highway, or a store that cannot open for the morning shift.
Some situations feel urgent but can safely wait. A sticky deadbolt that still operates, a spare key you would like duplicated, or a plan to replace locks next week can all be scheduled during daylight hours without any overnight fee.
Desert heat is the one Las Vegas factor that changes every priority. The National Weather Service reports that a closed vehicle climbed from a safe temperature to 94.3 degrees in just over two minutes. It also counts an average of 38 childhood heatstroke deaths every year using data from 1998 through 2022. If a child or pet is locked in a car, call 911 before you contact anyone else.
| Situation | Emergency? | First call |
|---|---|---|
| Child or pet locked in a car | Yes, life safety | 911, then a locksmith |
| Locked out of home at night | Yes | 24/7 locksmith |
| Door will not lock after a break in | Yes | Police report, then a locksmith |
| Locked out of car with a roadside plan | Yes | Roadside plan, then a locksmith |
| Lost only car key while stranded | Yes | Automotive locksmith |
| Want a spare key or new locks | No | Book a daytime visit |
What to Do in the First Five Minutes
Before calling anyone, walk around the property and try the back door, the side gate, the sliding patio door and the entrance from the garage. Check whether a roommate, relative or property manager has a key and could realistically arrive sooner than a service vehicle.
Resist the temptation to force a window or pry at the door. A bent frame or broken glass can turn an $85 lockout into a repair bill several times larger. At night, move somewhere well lit where you can wait comfortably and safely, such as a neighbor's porch or your own vehicle with the doors locked.
If the vehicle is the problem, look at your insurance card and any auto club membership. The Federal Trade Commission recommends calling your roadside assistance service first when you have one, since many of those plans already include lockout service.
Locate your identification while you wait. A responsible technician will ask you to demonstrate that you live at the address or own the vehicle before opening anything. That verification protects you as well.
Questions to Ask on the Phone
The phone call is where you prevent most problems, so take a breath and work through these questions before agreeing to a visit.
Begin by asking for the business name. The FTC warns that a company answering with a generic phrase like locksmith services, instead of an actual name, deserves suspicion.
Next, ask for the complete price for your specific job at this hour, including the trip charge and any overnight fee. Then ask where the company is located and what its license number is. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection advised in July 2026 that you should hang up if the person on the phone cannot provide an exact address. In Las Vegas, ours is City of Las Vegas Locksmith License #P64-00012.
Finally, ask how long until someone arrives, who exactly is coming, and whether they expect to drill. Most lockouts open without damage, and the FTC cautions against anyone who announces in advance that the lock must be drilled and replaced. Our house lockout service page explains what a normal entry actually involves.
What an Emergency Locksmith Should Cost in Las Vegas
These are the typical prices we publish for the valley, and nights, weekends and holidays usually add $25 to $75 on top. A firm quote depends on the lock, the vehicle and the hour, so use these figures to measure any phone quote you receive.
For a national view, the Fixr cost guide, updated January 31, 2025, puts a house unlock at $50 to $175 and a car unlock at $80 to $150. It adds $150 to $250 for after hours calls. A phone quote far below these ranges is a warning, not a bargain. A common pattern is a very low price advertised with an and up tag, followed by a much larger bill at the door.

| Job | Typical price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| House lockout | $85 to $195 | Add $25 to $75 at night |
| Car lockout | $45 to $135 | Add $25 to $75 at night |
| Basic cut car key | $50 to $180 | Price varies by make |
| Transponder key | $150 to $350 | Programming included |
| Rekey after lost keys | About $20 to $50 per lock | Plus the visit |
| New deadbolt installed | $100 to $300 | Parts and labor |
Red Flags When the Technician Arrives
Most bad experiences follow an identical script. The phone quote sounds low, the person who arrives claims the job is more complicated than expected, and the price suddenly jumps. If the price at the door does not match the phone estimate, you are entitled to refuse the work and send the technician away.
Pay attention to the vehicle. The FTC notes that most locksmiths arrive in a service vehicle clearly marked with the company name. Be careful with anyone who will not show ID, insists on cash only, or reaches for a drill before attempting to pick the lock.
When the job is finished, request an itemized invoice listing parts, labor, mileage and the service call, as the FTC recommends. A legitimate company provides one without argument. For additional warning signs, read our guide on how to avoid locksmith scams in Las Vegas.
After the Door Opens
Getting back inside is only the first step. If your keys were lost or stolen, whoever finds them may also have your address from a wallet or vehicle registration. A rekey makes the old keys useless, and our home rekeys start at $79.99. Our comparison of whether to rekey or replace helps you decide.
If the lock itself was damaged, replace it rather than rekeying it. If your car keys are gone, an automotive locksmith can cut and program a replacement key beside the vehicle, which can save you a tow to the dealership.
Silver State Locksmith answers 24/7 across the Las Vegas valley, Henderson and North Las Vegas. A technician usually arrives within 20 to 30 minutes in most of the valley, and you hear the price before any work begins. Save the number today, while you are calm and comfortable.

Questions We Get Asked
How fast can an emergency locksmith get to me in Las Vegas?
Across most of the valley, a technician usually arrives within 20 to 30 minutes of the call. Traffic, the time of day and your distance from the city center all affect that window. Request an estimated arrival time on the phone and call back if it passes without an update.
Will an emergency locksmith damage my door?
Most home and car lockouts open without damage using picks or entry tools. Drilling is a last resort for broken or very high security locks. Be wary of anyone who insists on the phone, before seeing the lock, that it must be drilled and replaced.
What do I need to show the locksmith when I am locked out?
Bring a photo identification card showing the address, or alternatively mail, a lease or a utility bill with your name on it. For a vehicle, the registration or title works. A locksmith who skips this verification is not protecting you, so expect the question and have documents ready.
Should I call 911 or a locksmith if my child is locked in the car?
Call 911 first. A closed vehicle in Las Vegas heat can reach dangerous temperatures within minutes, and emergency responders are authorized to break a window if necessary. Once the child is safe, a locksmith can open the car or repair a damaged door and lock afterward.
