What we work on

We cover current models and older vehicles, imported and domestic, along with motorcycles and vans. Newer cars need their keys programmed to the vehicle electronically, and we carry the equipment to do that at the roadside.

Being licensed matters more in automotive work than most customers realize. An unlicensed operator who damages a door skin, a lock barrel or an immobiliser leaves you holding the repair bill. We are licensed, bonded and insured, under City of Las Vegas license P64 00012.

Why we are usually cheaper than the dealership

A dealership generally wants the vehicle brought to them, which often means paying for a tow before anybody has cut a key. They then work from your registration documents and their own schedule, which can mean waiting several days.

We come to the vehicle instead, and cut and program the key where it is standing. For most makes and models that is both faster and less expensive. Call for a quote on your specific vehicle before you commit to anything.

Say so immediately when you call, because vehicles heat up dangerously quickly in this climate and we treat these calls as the highest priority, ahead of everything else currently in the queue.

If the situation looks genuinely dangerous, telephone the emergency services first and call us afterwards. No lock is worth more than the person inside the car.

Response times across the valley

We answer the phone 24 hours a day, and a technician normally reaches you within 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and where in the valley you are.

Tell us exactly where the vehicle is standing. A level and space number in a garage, or the nearest cross streets on the road, saves the technician circling a car park while you wait beside the car.

What you can safely check yourself first

Stop and look before you spend money. Walk around the car and try every door handle, including the rear doors and the hatch or trunk. One door that never locked is the free fix.

Check your phone for a spare key plan. If you keep a spare with a family member who lives close by and is ten minutes away and you are safe in the shade, that can be the cheapest answer. Some newer cars also have a maker app, so check your owner's manual.

Do not use a coat hanger, a shoelace or a wedge from a stranger. Door seals, wiring and side airbag parts sit inside the door, and a wrong move can leave you with a repair bill that costs more than the call you were trying to avoid.

If a child or a pet is locked inside

Call 911 first and say where you are. Emergency crews can reach you and decide what to do. We treat these calls as top priority, but the dispatcher is the right first call.

Do not leave to find a spare. Stay with the car, keep the person or animal in sight, and tell the dispatcher what you see. When you call us after 911, say that someone is inside so we can move you to the front of the line.

How a pro works a car lockout, in order

A trained technician does not start with the hardest method. The order below is how the job usually goes, and it is why a good lockout call ends without a scratch.

Step 1 Confirm the car and the ownerWe ask for the year, make and model, where the car is parked, and whether the engine is running. At the car we ask for ID and a registration or insurance document.
Step 2 Pick the entry that fits the carOlder cars with pull up lock posts and newer cars with electronic locks do not open the same way. This is why we ask for the model before we leave.
Step 3 Open without forceWe use tools made for vehicle entry and protect the door seal and paint. A good job leaves no marks.
Step 4 Test every lockOnce the door is open we check that the locks, windows and alarm work as before.
Step 5 Stop and decide on keysIf the key is lost and not just locked inside, we can cut and program a new one at the car. See car key replacement for how that works.

Roadside assistance or a locksmith

Many drivers already have help in their wallet. AAA says on its roadside page that lockout help is offered, and that if its technicians cannot unlock the car it will tow you to an approved service location nearby. The same page says roadside benefits begin three days after payment of dues, and that service comes from independent facilities contracted by AAA. See the AAA roadside page.

That makes a plan a good first call when you are safe, the car is shaded and you can wait. It is a poor fit when you are in a dark garage at night, standing in the sun, or the plan has just started. Your insurance card or your credit card may also list a roadside number, so check them before you pay out of pocket.

A mobile locksmith is the better call when the wait matters, the car is a newer model with electronic locks, or you also need a key made. We can open the car and make the key in one visit, which saves a second appointment.

When the key will not turn or the ignition sticks

A car that will not start is not always a lockout. Three causes cause most calls, and you can tell them apart before you call.

Worn key. If the key is old and the teeth look smooth, it may not lift the pins in the ignition all the way. A fresh key cut from the car often fixes it. Do not force a worn key, because it can break off in the cylinder.

Worn ignition cylinder. If the key goes in but turns hard or only works when you jiggle it, the ignition may be worn. We can repair or replace the cylinder and cut a matching key.

Steering lock bind. If the key will not turn and the steering wheel is pushed against a curb or a wall, the wheel may be loaded against the lock. Turn the wheel gently both ways while you turn the key. If it still will not move, stop and call.

Key turns but nothing happensThis points to the car battery, the starter or the immobilizer, not the ignition. A locksmith can check the key signal, a mechanic checks the battery.
Key will not come outMake sure the car is in park, then try the steering wheel trick. Do not pull hard.
Key is stuck or broken in the lockDo not push the piece deeper. Call, and tell us which lock it is.

Fob and smart key problems

A dead battery causes many fob calls. Toyota's 2014 Camry owner's manual says the standard battery life of the electronic key is 1 to 2 years and that the battery drains even when the key is not used, because the key always receives radio waves. It lists signs of a weak battery, such as the remote not working or a smaller detection area. Open the Toyota manual.

The same manual says to use the mechanical key to unlock the doors when the smart key system does not work. Many smart keys hide a metal key inside the fob for this reason. Check the release button on your fob, because it is worth finding before you need it.

Newer keys also carry a chip that the car must know. Toyota's manual says its keys have built in transponder chips that stop the engine from starting if the key has not been registered in the car's computer. That is why a cut key alone will not start a car and why we carry programming tools.

The Las Vegas angle

Heat is the big local factor. A car left in the sun gets dangerous fast, and the NWS 10 minute warning above is why we say to call 911 for anyone inside. If you are alone and locked out in summer, move to shade, keep water with you and tell the dispatcher how long you have been outside.

Parking structures are the second factor. Hotels, casinos and condo towers have levels, numbered spaces and gates. Tell us the building name, the level, the space number and which entrance to use. Text us a photo of the nearest level sign if you can.

Rental cars and hired rides are the third. If the car is a rental, check the paperwork for a roadside number first, because the company may handle a lockout. If you need a new key, we ask for the rental agreement as proof you may have the car opened.

How to check any locksmith before you let them in

Ask for the business name, the license number and the total price before the technician starts. Nevada law, NRS 655.070, says every person who wants to operate as a locksmith must get a permit from the county sheriff and must carry the permit at all times. Read NRS chapter 655.

Can you make a key if I have lost every copy?

Yes, and losing the final key is a routine job for us rather than the disaster it feels like. We originate an entirely new key from the vehicle itself and program it to the immobiliser, so no original is required as a starting point.

Will opening the door damage my car?

Not in normal circumstances. We use tools designed for vehicle entry rather than improvised ones, which is the reason a coat hanger and a helpful stranger so often end in a bill for a door skin or a window regulator.

Do you handle transponder keys and proximity fobs?

Yes, both. A transponder key carries a chip that must be recognized by the engine control unit, and a proximity fob has to be paired to the vehicle. We carry the programming equipment for both in the vans.

Will you check the vehicle is mine?

We will, and any reputable locksmith should. Identification together with the registration or insurance document is the simplest answer. For a hire car, the rental agreement is what we need to see.

Is it better to call roadside assistance or a locksmith for a car lockout?

If you are safe, in the shade and not in a hurry, your roadside plan is a fine first call. If the plan just started, it is hot or dark, the car has electronic locks or you also need a key made, a mobile locksmith is usually faster.

What should I do if my keys are locked in a running car?

Stay near the car and keep your phone with you. Tell us the engine is running when you call. If a child or pet is inside, call 911 first.

Why will my key not turn the ignition?

Most often the key is worn, the ignition cylinder is worn, or the steering wheel is loaded against its lock. Turn the wheel gently while you turn the key. If it still will not turn, stop and call, because forcing it can break the key.

Can a dead fob battery leave me locked out?

It can stop the remote from working, but many smart keys hide a metal key you can use on the door. Toyota's 2014 Camry manual says the standard battery life of its electronic key is 1 to 2 years.
