Which Saab Key Do You Have?

Saab progressed from plain keys on the classic 900 to keys with an immobilizer chip in the 1990s, then to remote fobs, and finally to a smart key on the last models.

Plain cut keyThe classic 900 from before the mid 1990s uses a plain metal key, which we cut from the original key code or by decoding the lock.
Chip key with remoteMost 9-3 and 9-5 cars use a key with an immobilizer chip and lock buttons on it, and both the key and the remote have to be programmed to the vehicle.
Folding keySome later Saabs use a fob with a blade that folds out when you need it, and we cut the blade and program the fob to the vehicle.
Smart keyThe 9-4X and the final 9-5 use a keyless fob with push to start, and a replacement has to be programmed. We tell you up front if any step requires outside help.

Saab Models and Their Keys

Saab 9-2X

The 9-2X was sold for 2005 and 2006 and was built on the Subaru Impreza, so its key follows that Subaru, and if you give us the VIN we will bring the correct key for your vehicle.

Saab 9-3

The first 9-3 from the late 1990s to 2002 uses a key with an immobilizer chip and a remote. The second 9-3 from 2003 uses a remote fob key with a chip, and the ignition sits between the front seats.

Saab 9-4X

The 9-4X was sold for a single model year, 2011, and it shares a lot of engineering with the Cadillac SRX. It uses a smart key with push to start, and a replacement fob requires programming to the vehicle.

Saab 9-5

The first 9-5 from the late 1990s to 2009 uses a transponder key with remote buttons and a console mounted ignition. The redesigned 9-5 sold around 2010 and 2011 uses a smart key with push to start.

Saab 9-7X

The 9-7X SUV was sold from 2005 to 2009 and was built alongside General Motors trucks, so it uses a GM style key with a separate remote. We cut the key and pair the remote at the vehicle.

Saab 900

The classic 900 from 1979 to 1993 uses a plain cut key, while the newer 900 from 1994 to 1998 introduced an immobilizer on many cars, so check for a thick key head or a separate remote.
