Which Lincoln Key Do You Have?

Lincolns received transponder keys earlier than many brands, beginning in the late 1990s on most models. Remote head keys came next, followed by proximity fobs with push to start, which most current Lincolns use.

  • Transponder chip keyOlder Lincolns use a key with a thick head and a security chip inside, usually paired with a separate remote. If the chip is not programmed, the engine will not stay running, so we cut and program it at the vehicle.
  • Remote head keyThe lock, unlock and trunk buttons are built into the key head, and some Lincolns from the 2000s and early 2010s use this design. We program both the security chip and the remote buttons.
  • Smart key with push to startMost current Lincolns use a proximity fob, which holds a hidden metal blade for the driver door. We program a replacement fob to the vehicle on site.
  • Plain cut keyOnly older Lincolns built before the late 1990s use this key, which has no chip and no buttons. We cut it from the factory code or by decoding the lock.

The Navigator has used a transponder key since it debuted in the late 1990s, with a separate remote on early trucks. Later Navigators moved to remote head keys, and newer ones use a proximity key with push to start on most trims.

The Corsair arrived for 2020 and uses a proximity smart key with push to start. We program a new fob at the vehicle and cut its hidden emergency blade for the driver door.

Lincoln Nautilus

The Nautilus, which replaced the MKX for 2019, uses a proximity smart key with push to start, and we program a replacement fob to the vehicle on site.

Lincoln Aviator

The first Aviator, sold in the early 2000s, uses a transponder key with a separate remote. The Aviator returned for 2020 with a proximity key and push to start, and although some can also use a phone as a key, we make the physical fob.

Lincoln MKZ

The early MKZ, and the Zephyr before it, use a transponder key with a separate remote. Later MKZs moved to a proximity key with push to start on most trims, and the model ended around 2020.

Lincoln Continental

Older Continentals that ran into the early 2000s use a cut key, with a security chip on the later years. The Continental returned from 2017 to 2020 with a proximity key and push to start, so tell us which era you have when you call.

Lincoln MKC

What a Lincoln Key Costs in Las Vegas

A Lincoln transponder key with programming typically runs $150 to $350 in Las Vegas, and Lincoln proximity fobs usually cost more than that. A plain key for an older Lincoln is usually $50 to $180, and you should plan on $25 to $75 extra for a night, weekend or holiday call.

The key type matters most, followed by whether we are copying a working key or starting with none, and our Las Vegas price guide walks through how the total comes together.

Make a Spare Before You Need One

Lincoln proximity fobs cost more than plain keys, which is a good reason to add a spare before you need one. Programming a fob while another still works is quicker and less expensive than an all keys lost call, and our car keys page has the details.

Owning a Lincoln in Las Vegas

Lincolns in Las Vegas frequently pull into valet stands, hotel garages and casino parking structures, where fobs get mixed up or left behind. If your Lincoln has a door keypad, memorize the code so you can get inside if the fob goes missing, and since a fob left on a hot dashboard can drain quickly in summer, keep it in the shade or in your pocket.

Questions We Get Asked

Does a 2015 Lincoln Navigator use a smart key fob?

Many do, although the key depends on the trim, because the Navigator moved from transponder keys toward remote head keys and then proximity fobs over the 2010s. Tell us your trim when you call, and we program the matching key or fob to your Navigator on site without a tow.

Can you make a key for a 2009 Lincoln MKZ?

Yes, early MKZ models use a transponder key with a separate remote, and the chip must be programmed for the car to start, which we handle at your location. Later MKZs moved to a proximity key with push to start on most trims, and we can program those as well.

Can you make a spare Lincoln fob before I lose my only one?

Yes, and the process is considerably easier while you still have a working key in hand, since the existing key simplifies programming. We program the spare fob to your Lincoln during one visit, and you will know the full price before we start.

What if my Lincoln key fob was stolen?

We can make a new fob and, in many cases, remove the stolen one from the vehicle memory so it can no longer start your car. You should report the theft to the police as well, and we check your identification plus the registration or title before we begin.
