Losing the only key feels like a tow truck problem. It almost never is. Here is what actually happens and what it costs.

Start With Ten Calm Minutes

Before anyone gets paid, retrace the day. Check the obvious pockets, the bags you carried, the car itself through the windows, and anywhere you paid for something. Locksmith or Dealership

The dealership can absolutely sell you a key. It will also usually require the car towed to them, days of waiting for the key to arrive, and a bill meaningfully higher than mobile service. A mobile automotive locksmith cuts the key from your vehicle identification number, programs the transponder at the curb, and has you driving the same day. What Happens When We Arrive

The technician verifies you own the vehicle, generates the correct cut from the VIN, and cuts the new key on the truck. For transponder keys and fobs, programming equipment pairs the new chip to your ignition and wipes the lost key from the vehicle where the system allows it, so whoever finds the old key cannot start your car. Then everything gets tested, doors, trunk and ignition, before the truck leaves.

While the equipment is out is the perfect time to cut the spare. A second key made during the same visit costs far less than the next emergency.
