Which MINI Key Do You Have?

The first BMW built Minis used a remote head key with a laser cut blade. Around 2007 Mini switched to a round fob that slides into the dashboard, and newer Minis use a proximity fob that stays in a pocket or cup holder while you press start.

Remote head key with laser cut bladeMost first generation Minis from 2002 into 2006 use this key, whose blade has a groove cut along its side instead of notches on the edge. We cut that groove precisely and program the chip and the remote.
Dashboard slot fobThis round fob slides into a slot beside the steering wheel before you press start, and most Minis from around 2007 to the mid 2010s use one. We program a new fob to the car on site in most cases.
Smart fob with push to startNewer Minis use a fob that stays in your pocket or the cup holder while you press start, and Comfort Access, when equipped, lets you open the doors without touching the fob. We program these on site, and each fob contains a small emergency blade.

MINI Models and Their Keys

Mini Cooper

Minis from 2002 into 2006 use a remote head key with a laser cut blade. The redesign that arrived for 2007 introduced the round fob that slides into the dashboard, and newer Coopers from around 2014 use a proximity fob with push to start.

Mini Cooper S

The Cooper S follows the same key changes as the Cooper, with early cars using a remote head key, cars from 2007 to about 2013 using the dashboard slot fob and newer ones using a push to start fob. Comfort Access was an option on many, not standard equipment.

Mini Cooper Convertible

The first Mini Convertible, from the mid 2000s, uses the remote head key with a laser cut blade. Convertibles from around 2009 use the dashboard slot fob, and the newer generation from around 2016 uses a push to start fob.

Mini Clubman

The first Clubman, from 2008 to 2014, uses the dashboard slot fob. The larger Clubman that arrived around 2016 uses a proximity fob with push to start, with Comfort Access on many cars.

Mini Countryman

The Countryman reached the United States for 2011 and uses the dashboard slot fob in its first generation. The second Countryman, from around 2017, uses a proximity fob with push to start, and Comfort Access was offered on many.

Mini Paceman

The Paceman was sold in the United States for only a few years, around 2013 to 2016, and it uses the dashboard slot fob like the Countryman it was based on. They are uncommon, so we confirm the year before we come out.

Mini John Cooper Works

John Cooper Works models follow the key type of the Mini body they are built on, so older JCW cars use the dashboard slot fob and newer ones use a push to start fob. Tell us the body style and year when you call.

Typical Las Vegas prices for a Mini transponder key with programming are $150 to $350, and Mini proximity fobs usually cost more than that. Night, weekend and holiday calls usually add $25 to $75 to the total.

Make a Spare Before You Need One

Mini fobs are small, easy to misplace and more expensive than a plain key. Adding a second fob while the first one still works is faster and less expensive than a visit after every fob is gone, and our car keys page explains the spare options.

Owning a MINI in Las Vegas

Minis are popular in Las Vegas because they slip into tight spaces in Strip garages and downtown parking lots. The tradeoff is that the small fob gets dropped between seats and left in shopping carts, and because desert heat drains fob batteries, a new battery is the first fix to try when your Mini starts missing the fob.
