Which BMW Key Do You Have?

BMW went from plain metal keys in the early 1990s to laser cut remote keys, then to fobs that slide into the dash, and now to keyless fobs that stay in your pocket the whole time.

• Laser cut remote keyThis key has a thick blade cut along the middle and lock buttons molded into the head, and it is common on BMWs from the late 1990s to the mid 2000s. We cut the blade and program both the transponder chip and the remote to the vehicle.
• Slot fob with start buttonThis is a plastic fob with no fixed blade that you push into a slot on the dash before pressing the start button. Many BMWs from about 2006 to 2013 used it, and a replacement has to be programmed into the vehicle's electronic key memory.
• Keyless fobThis fob stays in your pocket while you press the start button, and most BMWs from the 2010s on have one. We program it on site, although a few newer models need the dealer for one step, and we tell you up front if yours is one of them.
• Display keySome higher trims from the late 2010s on came with a larger fob that has a small touch screen on its face. It operates like a regular keyless fob, but it usually costs considerably more to replace.

BMW Models and Their Keys

BMW 1 Series

In the US the 1 Series was sold as a coupe and convertible from the 2008 model year to about 2013. These cars use a fob that slides into the dash before you press start, and cars with Comfort Access can start with the fob still in a pocket.

BMW X5

The first X5, sold through the mid 2000s, uses a laser cut remote key that turns in the ignition. The second generation from around 2007 moved to a slot fob with a start button, and later X5s use a keyless fob with push to start.

BMW 4 Series

The 4 Series arrived for the 2014 model year, so every one has push to start and a keyless style fob, and many trims also have keyless door entry. Newer 4 Series cars may need one dealer step, and we tell you before we start.

BMW Z4

The first Z4 from the mid 2000s uses a laser cut key with remote buttons that turns in a conventional ignition. The second generation from around 2009 uses a slot fob and start button, and the current Z4 uses a keyless fob.

BMW 2 Series

The 2 Series came to the US for the 2014 model year as the replacement for the 1 Series coupe, and every one uses a fob with push to start. Many later cars add keyless door entry, so check whether your handles respond to touch before you call.

BMW M2

The M2 has been sold in the US since the 2016 model year, and it uses a keyless fob with push to start. Some owners like a second fob for a partner or for track days, and we can program a spare to match the original.

BMW 3 Series

The 3 Series has the longest key history of any BMW, with a laser cut remote key on cars from around 1999 to 2005 and a slot fob on most cars from 2006 to 2011. Later cars use a keyless fob, and most trims after about 2012 have push to start.

How We Make a New BMW Key

   Read us the VIN

   The VIN on the windshield or the registration tells us the exact build, which decides which fob your BMW will accept.

   We drive to the car

   We come to your home, your job or the parking garage with blanks and programming equipment already in the van.

   Cut and code

   We cut the emergency blade if the fob has one, then add the new fob to the vehicle's memory while you watch.

4. 4

   Test every button

   Before we leave, we start the engine, lock and unlock the doors, and check the trunk button on the new fob.

What a BMW Key Costs in Las Vegas

A BMW key is not a cheap key, but it costs less when it is done correctly the first time at your car. Typical Las Vegas prices run $150 to $350 for a key with programming on older remote keys, smart fobs cost more than that, and nights, weekends and holidays usually add $25 to $75.

Make a Spare Before You Need One

With one working BMW fob in hand, adding a second one is a short visit, because the vehicle already recognizes a key we can work from. Once every fob is gone, the job takes longer since the car has to accept a key it has never seen before, which is why a spare made today usually costs less than an all keys lost call later.
