What Kind of Fireproof Safe Do You Have?

Fire safes come in a few common designs, and each design tends to fail in its own predictable way. Find yours below so you can describe what you see when you call us.

Fire Chest or Document Box

Fire Chest or Document Box

This is a small portable box with a hinged lid and a key lock, usually kept on a closet shelf with passports and deeds inside. The round tubular key gets misplaced constantly, and the inexpensive latch can bend if someone tries to pry the lid open.

Upright Fire Safe With a Keypad

Upright Fire Safe With a Keypad

This is a taller cabinet with a swing door, an electronic keypad and a handle or lever beside it. Dead batteries and worn keypads cause most lockouts, and the bolts can also bind when the rubber door seal swells or dries out.

Fire Rated Gun Safe

Fire Rated Gun Safe

A tall gun safe may list a fire rating on a sticker inside the door, usually as a time paired with a temperature. A heavy door that sags on its hinges can drag against the bolts and make the handle difficult to turn.

Media or Data Safe

This type is designed to keep the interior far cooler than a paper safe, since drives, discs and film are damaged at much lower temperatures. If yours protects backups for a business, our data safe page explains those safes in more detail.

Problems We Fix

  • The key to my fire chest is gone.We can pick or decode most fire chest locks, and afterward we cut a replacement key or install a new lock so the box closes securely again.
  • The keypad lights up but the door stays shut.We test the batteries and the keypad first, and then we check the lock and the bolt mechanism hidden behind the door.
  • The handle turns but the door is stuck.A swollen seal or a sagging door often pins the bolts in place, so we relieve the pressure on the bolts and open the door without forcing the frame.
  • The safe went through a fire or a flood. We open the safe once it has completely cooled or dried, so you can recover your papers and decide whether the safe should be replaced.

How We Handle the Job

  1. 1

    Check ownership

We look at your identification along with a receipt, a lease or other paperwork showing that the safe and the room it sits in belong to you.

  2. 2

    Find the weak point

We identify the lock type and the door style so we can choose the gentlest practical way inside.

  3. 3

    Open without damage first

We work the lock, decode the key or bypass a failed keypad before drilling is ever considered.

  4. 4

    Repair and test

If drilling becomes necessary, we repair the opening and test the lock and bolts repeatedly so the safe locks properly again.

What Decides the Price

The price depends on the lock, the size of the safe and how the safe is failing. A document chest with a lost key is usually quick work, while an upright safe with a dead keypad and binding bolts generally takes considerably longer.

The time of day and the distance to your neighborhood can also affect the total, and you always hear the full price before we start. Our guide to locksmith costs explains how most locksmith charges are calculated.

Keeping a Fireproof Safe Working in Las Vegas

Fire safes trap moisture because the insulation inside the walls holds water that turns to steam during a fire. Even in dry Las Vegas air, a box that stays closed for months can smell damp inside, so add a small desiccant pack and replace it every few months. Keep the safe out of a hot garage, since summer heat can weaken keypad batteries and dry out the door seal.

Set the safe on the concrete slab inside the house and bolt it down if the manufacturer allows it, because a small fire chest is easy for a burglar to carry away. During monsoon season, keep it off the floor of any room that has flooded before, since most fire safes are not sealed against standing water unless the label specifically says so.
