What Happened on This Job
The call was for a new key on a 2022 Cadillac Escalade. That generation of Escalade uses a smart key with push button start, so a replacement key is not simply cut on a machine, because the vehicle has to learn the new fob electronically before it will ever start with it.
We arrived with the fob and our programming equipment, and we began the job the same way we begin every GM smart key. Partway through, we discovered the real problem. The ignition was broken, and no locksmith tool can program around a broken ignition. Because the truck could not move through its normal start sequence, the key programming had nowhere to go.
The chart below shows how the job unfolded from that moment, with each trade handling the part of the repair it actually specializes in.

Why a Broken Ignition Stops a New Key
On a push button GM vehicle, the key learn runs through the vehicle itself. A common GM keyless start procedure, published by YOUCANIC for most 2015 and newer Buick, Chevy and Cadillac models, has the technician press START/STOP at several steps, wait through timed cycles, and then test each fob by starting the engine.
Every one of those steps depends on a working start system. If the ignition cannot switch between its modes, the vehicle never reaches the point where it accepts a new fob, and if the engine refuses to start, there is no reliable way to prove the new key works. That is exactly why we did not hand the owner an unfinished key and a guess.
General Motors has made these procedures more sensitive over time, not less. A GM bulletin dated November 14, 2024, covering the 2025 Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, says some fob programming events now include a two hour timer, and that the learn will fail if the vehicle goes to sleep during it. A vehicle with a faulty ignition is the worst possible candidate for that kind of procedure.
Where a Locksmith Stops and a Mechanic Starts
We are a licensed locksmith, and you can check our Nevada license whenever you like. Keys, fobs, programming and lock cylinders are our trade, while repairing the electrical and mechanical components of an ignition system is mechanic work that we would rather send to someone who performs it every day.
That boundary matters to the vehicle owner more than anyone. A locksmith who guesses at an ignition repair can turn a single visit key job into a tow, an expensive dealership bill and a lost week. The honest answer on this job was that the truck needed a mechanic before it needed us again.
The photo below is not from this Escalade. It shows an ignition lock component removed during a mobile mechanic repair in Southern California, the kind of part that sits behind the dashboard on vehicles that still use a traditional turn key. The Escalade uses a button instead, but the same principle applies, because the start system has to work properly before any new key can.

How We Found the Mechanic
We needed someone who would come directly to the vehicle, rather than a repair shop that wanted it towed in. So we searched on MechanicRank, a directory that compares mechanics and auto repair shops city by city.
Its page for mobile mechanics in Las Vegas lists mechanics who drive to your location, which was exactly what this situation required. That is where we found Heaven's Auto Tech, a 24 hour mobile mechanic in Las Vegas, and you can see their MechanicRank profile too. Their mechanic came out and repaired the ignition right at the vehicle, and the Escalade could run its start system normally again.
Afterward we returned, finished programming the new key, and tested it the way we test every key we make, by locking the doors, unlocking them and starting the engine. The owner never had to arrange a tow or wait for an opening in a dealership service department.

What to Do If This Happens to You
Tell us up front if the vehicle will not start, will not power on, or displays a warning about the key or the start system. That single detail changes the plan, because we may need a mechanic involved first, and we would much rather know that before we drive out.
If you still have one working key, keep it with the vehicle, because adding a spare is usually the simplest job we do and is far easier than starting from nothing. If every key is gone, our guide on lost car keys with no spare explains your options.
And if the problem really is the ignition, a mobile mechanic can often repair it wherever the vehicle is parked. Our automotive locksmith page covers the key side of the job, and you always hear our price before we come out.
Questions We Get Asked
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2022 Escalade?
Yes. The 2022 Escalade uses a smart key with push button start, and a locksmith with the right programming equipment can add a new fob at the vehicle, provided the start system is working.
Can a locksmith fix a broken ignition?
A locksmith can often repair a worn key or a worn ignition lock cylinder. When the fault is electrical or mechanical, as it often is on a push button start system, a mechanic is the right call.
Why could the new key not be finished?
A GM key learn runs through the START/STOP button and finishes by starting the engine. With a broken ignition the truck could not complete those steps, so the key could not be programmed or tested.
Do I need to tow my car to a dealer for this?
Usually not. A mobile mechanic can repair many ignition problems at the vehicle, and a mobile locksmith can program the key there too.
